we are arriving in Tokyo on April 13 and going to Kyoto. We leave Tokyo 4/26.
will a 7 day pass get us back and forth between Kyoto and Tokyo?
is this the best way to go?

Hi there!
Yes and Yes! The JR Pass will get you to Kyoto using the high speed Shinkansen. In addition the pass is about the same price as a normal return ticket but now gives you 7 days of unlimited travel. For instance a day trip to Osaka or Nara suddenly becomes much easier.
