Hi there,

I am looking to purchase the 7 days JR Pass for my trip in October.

However, I noticed that the JR Pass does not cover the Kyushu Shinkansen.

I understand that I would need to take the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka, thereafter, change to another Shinkansen to Hakata, but I am not sure if the train I am required to change is on Kyushu Shinkansen.

My question is :

  1. How do I go to Tokyo to Hakata with my 7 Days JR Pass?

  2. Will I be able to get around Fukuoka with my 7 Days JR Pass as I noticed the JR Pass Maps covered are mainly Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto.

  3. If I am able to get around Fukuoka with my 7 Days JR pass, is there a map that I can make reference to in order to plan my trips?

  4. How do I read the timetable for the Shinkansen as I would need to plan to and fro HAKATA? I understand that the journey is about 5 hours odd to and fro.

Hello there,

1.) The JR Pass does include the Kyushu Shinkansen line! Where did you read it does not? The only thing not covered is the Mizuho Shinkansen train on the Kyushu Shinkansen line but you can use any other Shinkansen train, like the Sakura and Tsubasa instead. From Tokyo, you take the Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka where you transfer to the Sakura Shinkansen to Hakata.

2.) There are not many JR lines around Fukuoka but you can where JR lines are available.

3.) Yes, www.jrpass.com/map

4.) For travel times, I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/timetable and more. It's a great tool for planning with the JR Pass. We also have a useful interactive map with all JR lines included.
