Hi

I am arriving in Japan on 30.8.12 (Tokyo) and leave on 22.9.12 (Osaka). I will be based in Yokohama as I have free accommodation and am very much on a budget. I am trying to decide between a 14 and 21 day pass. The first week will be spent in Yokohama and Tokyo - does the rail pass cover the train between the 2??? Also does it cover the metro in Tokyo.

I am also wanting to fit in Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and maybe Nagasaki with the least amount of accommodation needed.

Or do you have any other suggestions for great day trips from Yokohama??

Thanks

Hi there!

Here are some answers for you:

Does the rail pass cover the train between Yokohama and Tokyo? Also does it cover the metro in Tokyo?

Yes, the JR Pass does cover travel between Yokohama and Tokyo (here's a sample itinerary). While the JR Pass does not cover the municipal metro within Tokyo, you can get good use of the rail pass on JR lines throughout Tokyo. Here's a map of JR lines in Tokyo for reference.

Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and maybe Nagasaki from Yokohama - 14 and 21 day pass?

For a 14 day pass to be economical you'll need to spend at least ¥45,100 on JR tickets. For a 21 day to be economical, you'll need to spend ¥57,700 on JR tickets. Lets take a brief look at your main stops to get an idea of your costs:

  1. Tokyo > Kyoto: ¥13420, (164mins, 513km)
  2. Kyoto > Osaka: ¥540, (28mins, 42km)
  3. Osaka > Hiroshima: ¥10150, (104mins, 345km)
  4. Hiroshima > Nagasaki(nagasaki): ¥12850, (190mins, 434km)
  5. Nagasaki(nagasaki) > Kansai airport: ¥19200, (389mins, 837km)

JR ticket cost: ¥56160 for 5 legs

  • 14 day rail pass (¥45,100) saving: ¥11060

As you can see from the above costs, you stand to make good savings of ¥11,060 with a 14 day pass, but will need to do a further ¥1540 of JR travel to make purchasing a 21 day pass worthwhile. I think this will very much depend on the amount of extra travel you do from Yokohama, but could easily be reached.

Day (and slightly longer) trips from Yokohama

I recommend the following trips from Yokohama:

  • Nikko World Heritage Site
  • Hakone / Fuji Five Lakes / Kawaguchiko
  • Karuizawa
  • Nagano / Jikokudani / Yudanaka onsen - Nagano
  • Kamakura (very close)

Delivery to Hong Kong - signature required?

For your security, all our FedEx deliveries require a signature on receipt. If your friend is not at home when FedEx call, they will leave a card which your friend can use to rearrange a delivery at a more convenient time. Alternatively, she will be able to pick up the rail pass at the local FedEx office.

Hope this helps!
