Dear Mari,

We are planning to visit Japan and will travel from Tokyo to Kyushu, then to Kyoto and then back to Tokyo. As we may stay for a long period in Kyoto and will not be using the JR passes there, we intend to buy 2 separate JR passes for each travel leg. Is this possible?

Thank you

Hi there,

Yes, it is totally possible to buy multiple passes and activate them at various points in your trip, in fact this is a very popular option.

It's worth bearing in mind the following per day costs for the different flavours of the JR Pass:

  • 7 day (¥28,300) = ¥4043/day
  • 14 day (¥45,100) = ¥3221/day
  • 21 day (¥57,700) = ¥2747/day

This means that buying 2 x 7 day passes at ¥56,600 is a very similar price to buying 1 x 21 day pass at ¥57,700.

Hope this helps!
