My daughter will be a student at Sophia University in Tokyo for 7 weeks during June and July. Can this pass be used in the city to travel from the university to the dorm close seijougakuen-mae station?
Also, she will be visiting a friend in Nagaoka and another friend in Osaka. Can she use the pass to visit her friends? Will this save us money versus purchasing individual tickets when needed. Thanks for any help you can give me. She's leaving in a week.

Hi Mary,

Congratulations from me to your daughter for being able to study in Tokyo, it is always a great opportunity.
I looked into the route from Seijougakuen Mae, this station is on the Odakyu-Odawara line, which unfortunately does not accept the JR Pass. Instead I would buy a monthly or weekly ticket for this, which is a good way to make savings too!

Going to Nagaoka and Osaka is a different matter, here the Japan Pass can give you some very good value especially if you would be able to do the full trip within 7 days.

If you do buy a JR Pass, make sure that she is eligible for it by entering Japan under a 90-day tourist visa and not a student visa for instance.

Let me know if I can help with anything!

Thanks for your prompt an accurate response. I think we will purchase the 2 week pass since Michelle will not be able to use the one week pass for both trips. She will go during the 2 first weekends in Japan. It will be more than 7 days.

With regards on the Seijougakuen Mae, we'll take your advice and purchase a monthly ticket for the savings.

Daniel,

One more thing, is the Shinkansen part of the JR pass? In other words, can she ride the Shinkansen to Nagaoka and Osaka?

Hi again!

Here are the prices for one way tickets

Tokyo - Nagaoka ¥ 8,700

Tokyo - Osaka ¥ 14,050

Generally there is no discount for return tickets in Japan, so the price for a return is simply double that of a one way ticket.

I hope this helps,
Daniel
