Single trip pass vs JR Pass

Hi

We (2 seniors) will be making a trip in late January 2025 to the following places:
Fly in to Nagoya - Gero (1 night)
Gero - Takayama (2 nights)
Takayama - Shirakawago (1 night)
Shirakawago - Kanazawa. (1night)
Kanazawa - Osaka. (3 nights)
Will fly out from Osaka.

Based on the above tentative itinerary, is it better to buy single trip ticket or to buy a 5/7 day JR Pass ?

Would 2 nights in Takayama be sufficient ?

Appreciate your guidance.

Thank you
Cheow

Hi there,

Yes, for your itinerary I’d recommend purchasing a Takayama-Hokuriku Pass as it will cover your itinerary fully, including bus tickets to and from Shirakawa-Go.

Two nights in Takayama is perfectly adequate, it’s not as big of a city as some other major ones e.g. Osaka, Tokyo etc. and even then a lot of people choose to stay only one night there so they can see lots of places.

Kind regards,

Alexis
