Hello Guys,

Just bought a JR Pass.

After arriving in Japan and exchanging to my JRPass, can I just jump on any trains or will I have to do any reservations (espaecially for the Shinkansen)?
Off course I know the risk of not getting a seat would be on my side but I just need to know if a reservation is mandatory as I know it from trains in Eastern Europe.

Hi there!

Thank you for ordering the JR Pass!
The JR Pass allows you take make seat reservations free of charge. This is not required however because almost every train has reserved and non reserved seats. The only train that has mandatory seat reservations is the Narita Express.

For the Shinkansen, you can either just hop aboard and take one of the non reserved seats or reserve a ticket up to 5 min before departure!

Enjoy The ride!
Daniel
