Hello,

I'm wondering if it's worth it for myself and my husband to get JR passes while visiting Japan for 10 days in August.

I used to be an expat living in Osaka so I have a general idea of how to get around but when I lived in Japan I never travelled on the JR lines.

We are flying into Kansai and then spending a day in Osaka followed by 5 days in Nara with a day trip to Kyoto. Then we will go back to Kyoto to take the Shinkansen to Mt. Fuji for a night and then over to Tokyo for 4 nights. While in Tokyo we will do a day trip to Nikko. We are flying out of Japan from Tokyo.

Do you think it's worth it to get the 7 day JR Pass?

Thanks for your help!

Hi there!

Lets compare the cost of a 7 day rail pass (¥28,300) against the cost of JR tickets:

  1. Kyoto > Odawara: ¥11550, (177mins, 429km)
  2. Odawara > Tokyo: ¥1450, (36mins, 83km)
  3. Tokyo > Nikko: ¥5230, (121mins, 150km)
  4. Nikko > Tokyo: ¥5230, (117mins, 150km)
  5. Tokyo > Narita airport terminal 1: ¥2740, (58mins, 79km)

TOTAL: ¥26200 for 5 legs

As you can see the total cost of JR tickets is less than that of the 7 day rail pass. Unless you do more JR travel than you have indicated, it will make most sense for you to use individual tickets as needed I think.

You can look up precise train timetables and costs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia through our video blog.

Hope this helps!
