Hi,

My boyfriend and I are going to Japan for 14 days (december 23 to january 5). We are going 3 days in Osaka, 4 days in Kyoto and 7 days in Tokyo. We want to take the Shinkansen form Kyoto to Tokyo and the train from Tokyo to Narita's airport, but except that, we don't know what kind of transportation we are going to use. What are your suggestions? Do we need to buy the JR Pass? How much money can we save this way?

Thank you,
Catherine

Hi Catherine!

If you arrive into Kansai Airport and depart from Tokyo Narita and intend to stay within the metropolitan areas of each city, I reccomend you look into city level passes only, and purchase a single JR bullet train ticket between Kyoto and Tokyo (around ¥13,000). If you do think you'll do more than ¥28,300 of JR travel, then a JR Pass may be worthwhile, but it doesn't look like that will be the case during your trip.

Make sure you check out the Haruka + ICOCA travel card deals for your travel from Kansai to Osaka and discounted metro travel, and also the 1 and 2 day metro passes available in Tokyo.

If you do decide on any other locations, let me know and I'll be able to check for you if you'll make savings. Alternatively, you can look up precise train timetables and costs at the Hyperdia travel planning website.

Hope this helps!
