Hi there!
You can use the JR Pass on certain night trains or "sleeper" trains, however they only travel to certain destinations for free:
- Sunrise Seto/Izumo (Tokyo > Osaka route)
- Akebono (Tokyo > Aomori)
- Hamanasu (Aomori > Sapporo)
Please note that these trains tend to depart in the evening around 8-10pm. Bullet trains work from 6:30-8pm as a general rule, with normal commuter trains working from 5:30-11pm.
I hope this helps!
