Hello!
If anyone can help me decide which of the two is the better option It would be much appreciated. I will be in Japan for 15 days that starts off in Tokyo and ends in Toyko.

Here is the itinerary

Tokyo - 6 Nights

Tokyo train to Osaka

Osaka - 7 nights but will be making 2 day trips to Kyoto and day trips to Hiroshima and Nara

Osaka back to Tokyo for a night than airport

Ive been trying to research the fares for each of these train rides but I can not for the life of me understand any of it.
Do the rates fluctuate thruout the season? Thanks so much for any help

Hi there!

I made a small inventory of ticket prices to see if a JR Pass would be useful for your travels.

Tokyo - Osaka ¥ 13,950
Osaka - Kyoto (return) ¥ 1,080
Osaka - Hiroshima (return) ¥ 20,300
Osaka - Tokyo ¥ 13,950
Tokyo - Narita Airport ¥ 3,140

This adds up to ¥ 52,420. The 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 45,100, so you would save ¥ 7,320 with this alone. You can also use the JR Pass on local JR lines in both Tokyo and Osaka or use it to make a day trip or two to an other city such as Nikko, Kamakura or Nara.

Ticket prices can indeed be a little confusing, when you start looking at them for the first time. They can vary depending on the type of train that you travel with, the route traveled, time and sometimes season.
The above ticket prices are normal prices you would pay without the JR Pass, all directly quoted from Hyperdia.

I hope this helps!
Daniel

hey! thanks so much for the speedy reply! I really appreciate it.

Do you think its necessary to have a JR pass for the first 6 days in Tokyo then?

Or should I just get the 7 day pass for the osaka half of the trip, as thats where I would be doing the most day trips?

Hi Again!

I would buy the JR Pass for the last part of your trip and start using it on the day that you travel to Osaka.
This way you can covered all of your pricy long distance travel.

For Tokyo I would stick to buying normal tickets, as travel around the capital is relatively cheap.

You could look into buying a Suica card make your travel around Tokyo more convenient.
