I am flying into Narita in early March for 2 nights, then I plan to take the train into Tokyo for 3 nights, then going to Kyoto for 2 nights, then moving onto Osaka for 2 nights, then back to Narita to fly out.....Here's my questions:

1)The bullet train to Kyoto takes how long versus the regular train?

2) What is the cost difference in the 2 trains?

Since I will be in Japan for 9 nights and plan to visit Narita, Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, am I just better off purchasing the 7 day rail pass?

Hi there!

It is possible to use local trains to travel Narita Airport - Kyoto but it is certainly not something I would suggest doing.
The journey takes about 11 hours and involves 6 transfers. You can find the route here. Instead I would recommend taking the Narita Express + Shinkansen which takes about 4 hours and just one transfer.

Using a JR Pass for this is a great option. A 7 Day JR Pass is roughly the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka, now you get 7 days of unlimited rail travel for the same price and it's easy to make savings.

I hope this answers your questions :)
