Narita Airport to Osaka

Hi there

I am planning to go to Japan in early July and will spend 4 days in Osaka & Kyoto, 3 days in Tokyo.
I will arrive at Narita airport at around 3.30pm and hoping to get the bullet train to Osaka without spend the first night in Tokyo, is this possible? what is the last Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin Osaka with the JR pass? Can I activate the JR pass and reserve the seats at Narita airport? What do I do if I miss the train that I reserved?

What is the other option apart from taking the Shinkansen train from Osaka(I am staying in Namba area) to Kyoto? Can I just reserve the seats the time when I leave Kyoto to Tokyo or I need to book it in advance?

Hi Sandy,

That is absolutely no problem! The travel time to Osaka is about 4 hours total, first with the Narita express to Tokyo and from there by direct bullet train to Osaka. Trains leave every 30 minutes and the last possible train connection with the JR Pass leaves Narita Airport at 18:48, giving you ample time to make the trip.

You can activate your JR Pass and reserve all tickets you wish at Narita Airport, you will have to take an unreserved seat if you miss your reserved train but most of the time the JR Staff will allow you to make a new reservation.

You can take the Shinkaisoku train that runs between Kyoto station and Osaka, this train is very quick and gets your from the heart of Osaka to Kyoto in about 30 minutes.

Shinkansen rarely sell out so you can make the reservations the moment that you want to travel, of course you can book in advance to, if you like the extra security.
