Dear Sirs

I will be coming to Japan on November 18, 2013. I am picking up my son who has been serving on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints in Kobe. Will I be able to purchase a Japan Rail Pass for him to allow him to travel with me and his mother from Kobe to Sapporo? Please advise.

Dear Mr. Barney,

The most important thing would be that your son entered Japan under a tourist Visa. You buy him a JR Pass gives that this condition is met. Please read our Eligibility page for more information about this.

As for the trip Kobe - Sapporo, the JR Pass is valid for the full route and you can make some very good savings over normal tickets but please be informed that the trip takes 14 hours of non stop train travel. I would recommend planning a couple of stop overs or consider taking a plane instead.

Have a pleasant journey,
Daniel
