Hello!

How can I use the JR Pass without seat reservation? Do I need to go to the train station and show the JR Pass, or should I reserve the ticket before it?

I would like to travel from Tokyo to Kyoto as soon as I arrive in Japan. So I will need to activate the JR Pass in the airport, and go to the train station. But I am worried of arrive on the train station and not be able to take the train. Is there any way to reserve it before arrive Japan? Or there is no risk that it would be full?

Thanks!

Hi there,

Your JR Pass is a valid ticket, meaning you can just get on and off the train as you like, using non-reserved seats. Of course, you can also make free seat reservations.

Trains rarely sell out (only during the new year period and Obon, are reservations needed). Also see:

Kind regards,
Daniel
