Hello, with my boyfriend we are organizing our 2-week trip to Japan from June 24 to July 7.
We plan as a program: 4 days in Osaka with a day in Hiroshima
3 days in Kyoto with a day in Nara and finally a week in Tokyo with a day at Mount Fuiji
First question: is the JR pass the most interesting option in your opinion?
Second question:
We have 2 large suitcases, should we take special seats on the trains between Osaka Kyoto and Tokyo?
Third question: Can we collect the jr pass at Osaka airport when we arrive?
And last question:
Do we have to book our train tickets in advance or is the Jr pass enough to take the trains and metro? Can we get tickets directly at the station just before taking the train?
Thank you in advance, have a nice day
JR PASS advice for 2 weeks vacation
Hi there,
I believe a JR Pass is a good option for you, considering that for most of your itinerary you'll be making your way around using the shinkansen bullet trains.
For your suitcases, because I don't know exactly how big they are I can redirect you to our blog post here so that you can determine whether you'll need to make additional luggage reservations.
Yes, you can activate your JR Pass in Osaka - you cannot "collect" it, if by that you meant purchase it there. You can find a detailed post on activating the pass at Kansai Airport here.
You'll need to make seat reservations in advance for train travel, but for use on the Osaka and Yamanote Loop metro lines in Osaka and Tokyo respectively you won't need to make reservations. It is possible to make reservations just before boarding the train you want, but I'd be wary of doing this because you cannot guarantee that there will be an available seat, but yes it is possible.
Hope this helps!
Alexis
