We are visiting Japan in December 2013, travelling route as follows :

14 Dec - Arrive Osaka in the morning to Yokohama
ChinaTown, Ramen Museum, Minato Mirai 21, Sea Paradise 17 Dec - Yokohama to Takayama
Hida Folk Village Day trip to Okuhida Hot Spring Village Old Town 20 Dec - Shirakawago
21 Dec - Kanazawa
22 Dec - Osaka
Osaka Castle, Downtown Osaka Day trip to Nara Osaka Aquarium 25 Dec - leaving to Kansai Airport

1) Is it worth to buy 14 days JR pass?
2) Which are the cities that we can use JR pass for subway and or local train/bus?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hi Lynda,

Looks like a well planned and detailed itinerary there :)

Let's have a look at ticket prices to see if a JR Pass would work out for you:

Kansai Airport - Yokoyama ¥ 15,200
Yokohama - Takayama ¥ 13,770
Kanazawa - Osaka ¥ 7,440
Osaka - Kansai Airport ¥ 1,160

1.) Your train travel is mostly limited to two trips, to Yokohama and from there to Takayama. A 14 day JR Pass would not be the best option here but I think that a 7 day JR Pass would be a great help as the price (28,300yen) is already less than Kansai Airport - Yokohama - Takayama and any additional travel you may do will just add to the savings.

2.) The JR Pass is valid on local JR trains and JR Buses in cities such as Yokohama, Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo but other kinds of transport such as the metro and non-JR buses unfortunately are not covered.

Hope this helps!

Hi Lynda,

For traveling in Osaka consider a Osaka Unlimited Pass which allows for unlimited travel on the city subway as well as free entrance / discounted prices for many attractions such as free entrance to Osaka Castle.

I hope this helps too!

Hi Daniel,

To visit the attractions in Osaka, it is more convenience to stay near Osaka Station or Shin Osaka Station?

Thank you.

Hi Lynda,

I think the better place to stay is Osaka station, simply because there's more there and the area is much more interesting. Travel wise, Shin-Osaka is good if you plan to take the Shinkansen a lot but I would suggest staying near Osaka otherwise.

If you really want to be in the heart of the city consider staying near Namba / Shinsaibashi, although traveling from here may be a little more complicated.

Enjoy Japan!
