Hello. Our Itinerary is April *-24 2025. We are landing in Osaka KIX and staying in Dotonbori area Apr 8
Apr 9train to Tokyo haven't picked area to stay in
Apr 10 Exploring several different sections of Tokyo until April 13
Apr 14 Going to mount Takao
Apr 15 taking private car to Kawaguchiko
April 16 trains within Kawaguchio or to Hakone
Apr 17 Train to Kyoto, then local trains within Kyoto from April 17-21
April 22-Train from Kyoto to Osaka: will use Osaka amazing pass for 2 days
Apr 24-osaka hotel train to Osaka airport KIX

Please let me know if the 14 day pass would be economical for this itinerary or if it is possible to purchase a 7 day pass for some of the trip and then some individual train passes for the rest.

Also does the JR pass include local trains within all of Tokyo, Kyoto, Hakone and Kawaguchiko area?

For your itinerary, a 14-day Japan Rail Pass would be convenient and likely economical, as it covers your major train travel: Osaka-Tokyo, Tokyo-Kyoto, and Kyoto-Osaka. However, if you calculate individual ticket costs, a 7-day pass (starting April 9 and covering April 9-15) plus individual tickets for Kyoto-Osaka and other local travel might save you some money.

The JR Pass covers JR-operated trains within Tokyo (like Yamanote Line) and Kyoto but not private rail lines, subways, or buses in these cities. For Hakone and Kawaguchiko, the JR Pass covers only part of the journey (e.g., JR Gotemba Line or Fujikyu Railway partially). Consider regional passes like the Hakone Free Pass for those areas as they are privately owned railways, or simply consider separately purchasing
a few additional tickets.
