Hi all,

I have been ready ready many sites including this one to find which is the best rail pass to get for our trip. Our itinerary is as follows,

Arrive Tokyo 8/4/2013 for 2 days
Tokyo to Kyoto 10/4/2013 for 7 days
Kyoto to Hiroshima 17/4/2013 for 2 days
Hiroshima to Tokyo 19/4/2013 for 5 days
24/4/2013 fly home

The questions I have are,

Is the 14 day pass the best option?
We plan to do day trips from these cities so can I use the rail pass for this?
Are we able to use the pass on the mtr in Tokyo.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Hi there,

I made a little overview of ticket prices to see if a JR Pass is a good option.
Narita Airport --> Tokyo ¥ 2,940
Tokyo --> Kyoto: ¥ 13,220
Kyoto --> Hiroshima ¥ 10,790
Hiroshima --> Tokyo ¥ 18,050

For a total of ¥ 45,000 the 14-day JR Pass is ¥ 45,100 so you are about even. It would depend on the day trips you would make on how much you could save. You can also use to JR-Pass for local JR lines in Tokyo, the pass however does not cover the Tokyo Metro.

Hope this helps!

Hi there,

Last couple of questions,

Can I buy the 14 day rail passes from this site now and have them delivered to Australia?

As it is a busy time of the year in Japan will we have problems getting seats on the train for our Kyoto dates?

As we know our itinerary we plan to book all our tickets when we arrive at Narita on the 8 /4/2013.

Hi again,

Yes you can exchange the pass up to 90 days after purchase so if you order it now you can use it in April. Shipping to Australia takes 3 working days so you should receive the pass by the end of the week.

Since you will book your tickets well in advance (at least 2 days) you should have no problem obtaining seats together. Also since you travel during the work week trains will be less crowded.

One final tip, if you plan to make a lot of reservations on the first day please bring a printed itinerary with places, dates and times you wish to travel, this will speedup the process significantly and the JR Staff will be grateful too!

Bon Voyage,
-Daniel
