Hello,
we are travelling to Japan for 4 weeks from mid March. We fly into Osaka, and our rough itinerary is (spending between 2 - 4 days in each location):

Osaka
Kobe
Fukuoka and Nokonoshima Island
(Flying to) Sapporo Aomori
Tokyo
Mt Fuji
Kyoto
Osaka

We are wondering if the 21 JR pass is worthwhile getting or if it will be cheaper to just purchase rail tickets whilst we're there?

Many thanks~

Hi there!

Interesting itinerary! Let's see if a JR Pass could be of help.

Osaka - Kobe ¥ 390
Kobe - Fukuoka ¥ 14,470
Sapporo - Aomori ¥ 13,600
Aomori - Tokyo ¥ 17,780
Tokyo - Mt Fuji ¥?,???(depends on area around Fuji visited)
Tokyo - Kyoto ¥ 13,420
Kyoto - Osaka ¥ 540

For a total of ¥ 60,200 or ¥ 2,500 already in savings as the 21 day JR Pass is 57,700. Note that the JR Pass is also valid for local travel around Osaka/Tokyo and can be used for (partial) travel to Fuji as well. Additionally it also covers travel from the Aiport in Hokkaido to Sapporo.

I hope this helps!
Daniel
