Is it worthwhile buying JR pass given my planned itinerary & any special rate for teenagers aged 15 & 16?

Itinerary in Osaka:

Day 1-Arrive at Osaka. Take all blue rapid train from Kansai airport to Namba
Day 2-Osaka- travel by subway within Osaka
Day 3- take train from Osaka to Takayama.
Day 4-Day trip by bus to Shirakawa-go, UNESCO World Heritage Site.. Back to Takayama.
Day 5- Takayama to Osaka by train
Day 6- travel by subway within Osaka
Day 7- day trip to Kyoto by train-(how long is the journey?) Travel by subway/bus within Kyoto. Back to Osaka
Day 8-travel by subway within Osaka
Day 9- depart from hotel to Kansai Airport by train

How much will it cost for a JR pass for an adult & for a teenager? Can JR pass be used on all trains including to & from airport & all subway? What is the last train timing from Kyoto to Osaka? Thank you so much for your advice.

Hi there,

Looking at your itinarary and planned travel, I think that it would be best to buy tickets as you travel. Basically long distance travel is traveled to a return Osaka - Takayama which is ¥ 20,020. The 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300 and travel just between Kyoto - Osaka would not be enough to make savings with the JR Pass.

For reference, the JR Pass can be used for local travel between Osaka - Kyoto (takes about 30 minutes) as well for local JR lines in Osaka and around Kyoto. Other transport types such as the Osaka Subway are not covered.

Hope this helps!

Hi Daniel,

Thanks so much for your prompt response. May I know which station should I take from Osaka(hotel @Namba station) to Takayama? How long is the journey? Tickets wise, any student rate for teenagers?

For my day trip to Kyoto, which station should I take from Osaka? How much does it cost? I would like to visit Nishiki Market, Higashiyama district & Gion. Will it be too much to cover in one day? In terms of hotel accommodation, I m flexible as long as it s reasonable n with good accessibility to train station? Should I consider a one night stay in Kyoto? Which area ll be most convenient for places of interest? I m more keen to visit scenic places in Kyoto than malls n temples. Would appreciate your advice.

Thanks.

Hi Carina,

Sorry for the delay in followup!

To travel from Namba - Takayama, 1st take a local train to Shin-Osaka, this is the Shinkansen station for Osaka. From where you can take the Shinkansen to Nagoya. Here transfer to the Hide wideview train traveling to Takayama. The whole trip should take about 218 Minutes. There's unfortunately no discount for students available.

Going to Kyoto, first travel to Osaka station from where you can take the ShinKaisuku express train to Kyoto which takes 540yen and just 29minutes. Staying in Kyoto is not a bad idea - as the evening admosphere downtown is well worth experiencing. I would recommend looking at Hotels around Kawaramachi - Shijou street. This is also very close to Nishiki Markt and Goin. I would also heartily recommend a visit to Kiyomizu-dera.

Have a great trip!
Daniel
