Hi. Thanks for your help. First time to Japan and i need to decide if buying a rail pass is cost effective. As of now we are flying into NRT on april 8 and staying in Shibuya for 5 nights planning on a few day trips from there. On April 13 we travel to Kyoto for 4 nights planning on at least one day trip from there. On April 17 we travel to Hiroshima for one night. On April 18 we travel back to NRT. I appreciate any help that can be provided or suggestions on ease and costs savings. Thanks. John

Hi there,

I'd suggest purchasing a JR Pass and setting the activation date for the 12th of April - this would cover any last-minute day trips out of Tokyo, the Shinkansen trips from Tokyo to Kyoto and then Hiroshima, the return trip to Tokyo, as well as any day trips out of Kyoto e.g. Nara, Osaka etc.

This would be your most cost-effective option due to your frequent use of Shinkansen trains. In general a round trip that begins and ends in Tokyo, passes through Osaka/Kyoto and reaches Hiroshima is a popular itinerary that the JR Pass is a good option for.

Kind regards,

Alexis
