Hi,

Traveling from the US to Japan September 12- October 5. I purchased a 7 day pass , but I think i might need a 14 day pass instead.

My itinerary is as follows:

Narita to Shibuya
Shibuya to Mt. Fuji ( Round trip)
Shibuya to Kamakara (Round trip)
Shibuya to Yokohama (Round trip)
Shibuya to Nikko ( Round trip)

Tokyo to Kyoto ( 3 days)
Day trip to Arashiyama

Kyoto to Osaka (3 days )
Day trip to Nara
Day trip to Kobe

Osaka to Hiroshima ( 2days)
Day trip to Miyajima

Hiroshima to Fukuoka ( 2days)

Fukuoka to Nagasaki (2days )

Nagasaki to Tokyo - Is there a Shinkanshen train to Tokyo?

Please suggest how to maneuver this trip using local and Shinkanshen trains , without my 14 day pass expiring.

Also, how do I make seat reservations on Shinkanshen ahead of time? Can someone help me with this ?

Thank you.
Sabari.

Hi there,

Nagasaki to Tokyo isn't directly covered by one Shinkansen line. You'll need to travel to Osaka and then take the Shinkansen to Tokyo. You can find a list of transit routes covered by the JR Pass here&goal_name=Tokyo&pass_list=japan_rail_pass).

This itinerary can certainly be done using the 14-day JR Pass. It may be possible to issue a refund for the 7-day pass so that you can purchase a 14-day pass instead: I'd suggest contacting our support team at [email protected] to see if this can be done. Most of the itinerary can be done via the Shinkansen, but if there's a particular route you're unsure about then I'd suggest using the Navitime Site to input your starting point and destinations and be given a range of travel options. Make sure to check the 'Japan Rail Pass' box under 'Tourist Passes' before clicking search!

You can't make shinkansen reservations until you have activated the exchange order of the pass that is mailed to you. Once you've done this, you can begin making reservations for your trips in advance - even one day in advance is fine, so to be safe I'd suggest making most of your reservations as soon as you've exchanged the pass. This can be done at the same JR Travel Desks that you activate the JR Pass at, and the staff will assist you as well.

Hope this helps!

Alexis
