Do I Really Need JR Pass for 7days in Tokyo & Hokkaido?

Hi..

Me and my other 5 friends will be going to Japan on 10th - 17th Oct 2012 (7days estimated). we will touched down on Haneda International Airport on 10th (11pm) and we have booked the Best Hotel in Shinjuku, Tokyo.

Since, we are planning to go for a sight seeing around Tokyo (10th-14th Oct) & Hokkaido (14th-17th Oct) - (perhaps other places to be visited), we need to ask for any suggestion on transportation which we might use during our 7 days in Japan for a smooth planning. Should we buy the JR Pass? or any suggestion for other transportation to be used?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there!

I think this depends on how you are planning on getting to Hokkaido and where you are going while there. For example, a single trip by train up to Sapporo from Tokyo costs ¥28,030 - almost the same as an entire 7 day JR Pass! This trip is long however and many prefer to fly this route. If you do it by train, I recommend the pass. If not, then I think I'd get more detail about your travel around Tokyo and Hokkaido before you make a decision.

Hope this helps!

thanks by the way! well.. for ur info, we are still planning for the places we might visit (tokyo & sapporo) since we just have 3-4days in each of both places..

well actually we did surveyed the interesting and most visited places in tokyo and hokkaido.. since we haven't got tour guide and any sorts of traveling agents assisting, it has made us so damn confused to choose due to lots of attractive places but lack of time to visit.. but the main reason for visiting is for sight seeing and explore the great different japanese cultures.

hope can get some ideas! thanks!

Hmmm - for Hokkaido by train I really recommend you take a look at JR Hokkaido's model courses. There are several great itineraries in there for Fall (1 and 2). These are tried and tested itineraries which are easily accessible by train.

Hoep this helps!
