How much is the cost to purchase a individual Shinkansen JR Rail Ticket from Tokyo Station to Osaka. Would you have a fee schedule for the different cost per rail ticket from city to city. Looking to travel between Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto, Nara and Hakone if possible. Will purchase a 7 day JR Rail Pass but we will be staying a total of 9 nights/10 days so we will have a few days outside of the 7 day time period. Trying to figure out the best and highest use of the 7 day rail pass since the days are consecutive and cannot be spread out over our 9 days. It is too expensive to purchase a 14 day JR Rail Pass for our stay in Japan.

Hi there,

The price for a one way ticket Tokyo - Osaka is ¥ 13,950 and is by far the most expansive part of your travel. So what I would recommand doing is planning your itinarary in such a way that you can be back in Tokyo before you pass expires.

You can use Hyperdia to look up ticket prices for your other routes, we also have a guide on how to plan with Hyperdia, which is a great point to get your started.

I hope this helps with your planning!

Daniel-san,

Thanks! Now my question turns to "where to stay" from October 22 - October 27 (October 28 will have to be a traveling date back to Tokyo, since this is day 7 of our 7 day JR Rail Pass). From our previous discussions, it sounds like we can travel from Tokyo to Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Nara and Hakone with our final stop being travel back toTokyo on October 28 Would you be able to provide us with a itenerary for this 6 day period including which city to stay in on which night that would make it the easiest for us to move around and see as much of the beauty of all of these locations. I can go online to find a hotel in which ever city you recommend on which night, for the nights between October 22 - October 27. Example: 2 nights in Osaka and 2 nights in Kyoto, etc. Obviously October 28 will have to be in Tokyo so that would be a total of 6 nights outside of Tokyo. Can do?

Hi Again!

Travel around Kansai, the area that includes Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and Kobe is easy and quick. What you could do is make your base in one of these cities and make day trips from there to all places you wish to visit. A hotel near Kyoto station would be ideally suited for this, you can reach Osaka from Kyoto within 30 minutes and Kobe and Nara within an hour. This way you don't have to move your luggage around all the time.

An alternative option is to spread your days over Kyoto and Osaka and make a day trip to Nara / Kobe from there. This way you can see both the lively night life of both Kyoto and Osaka. Would you could do here is 4 days Kyoto, visit Kyoto on day 1 and 2 and Nara on 3 and Kobe on 4 than on day 5 travel to Osaka before heading on for a night in Hakone.

I hope this helps!
Daniel
