Hi, Here's my plan for Japan travel next week
Day 1 Night 22:00 From Tokyo - Mastue by Sunrise Izumo
Day 2 Matsue (JR to Izumo)
Day 3 Izumo (JR to Oda)

Day 4 Oda ( bus to Hiroshima ??)
Day 5 Hiroshima (JR / Shinkansen to Onomichi)
Day 6 Onomichi (JR / Shinkansen to Himeji)

Day 7 Himeji (JR/ 特急 to Kinosaki)
Day 8 Kinosaki Onsen (JR/ 特急) to Kobe
Day 9 Kobe (Bus to Osaka Airport ?? )

Day 10 Osaka Airport

What is the cost effective way to get the pass? As I calculated the price online, not everything is covered by JR Pass. and seems JR pass is not much better than without the JR pass. Is there any buses in the list covered by JR Pass? Any other passes option? Since the Sunrise Izumo is the most costly one in the trip.

Hi there!

The only pass that will cover all the JR zones in your trip is the nationwide pass. Lets take a look at the cost breakdown of your trip:

  1. Tokyo > Matuse on Sunrise Izumo: 15,320
  2. Matsue > Izumoshi: ¥570 (42mins, 32km)
  3. Izumoshi > Kiyone: ¥6,580 (188mins, 212km)
  4. Kiyone > Oda > Kannabe: ¥980 (non-JR)
  5. Kannabe > Hiroshima: ¥4,810 (46mins, 111km)
  6. Hiroshima > Onomichi: ¥3,640 (45mins, 82km)
  7. Onomichi > Himeji: ¥5,860 (72mins, 167km)
  8. Himeji > Kinosakionsen: ¥3,760 (102mins, 104km)
  9. Kinosakionsen > Kobe(hyogo): ¥5,760 (202mins, 201km)
  10. Kobe(hyogo) > Kansai airport: ¥3,320 (88mins, 97km)

JR ticket cost: ¥49,620 for 10 legs

As you can see a 14 day JR Pass will give you full coverage for your trip and offers good savings over standard JR tickets. Note that you also retain the flexiblity to change/modify your plans as needed (hop on/off with a JR Pass), and can use the JR Pass in Tokyo too if you will be there for a while.
