Confused - Japan Rail Pass

Hello!

My husband and I arrive at Narita Airport on 18 October and depart on 28 October. Our itinerary so far is:

18 - 22 October explore Tokyo
22 - 25 October explore Hiroshima
25 - 28 October explore Kyoto
28 October take train to Narita Airport to head home to New Zealand.

We are planning on using our hotel shuttle service from Narita Airport to our hotel and activating our 7 day JRP Card on 22 October when we leave Tokyo knowing it will expire 7 days from that date (when we leave Japan).

My query is the JPR Card (basic?) travel card sufficient for this itinerary? I see on other websites there are other options (Japan Rail Pass - West, Kansai and Japan Rail Pass - West, Sanyo).

I appreciate any advice you can offer!

Kind regards,

Wendy

Hi there!

The JR Pass is without a doubt the best option for your itinerary. The JR Pass will cover all of your train travel, which would not be covered by any of the regional passes (such as the Kansai or JR West Pass). Here's a little list of ticket prices and savings you can make:

Tokyo - Hiroshima ¥ 18,250
Hiroshima - Kyoto ¥ 10,990
Kyoto - Narita Airport ¥ 16,330

This adds up to a total ¥ 45,570, the 7 day JR Pass ¥ 28,300 so you would save at least ¥ 17,270. Not bad right?

I hope this helps!

Thanks, Daniel! I really appreciate your reply. So the 'Basic' Japan Rail Pass would be sufficient for our travels? I see there are some listed as Japan Rail Pass - West, Kansai and Japan Rail Pass - West, Sanyo. Is there one specific Pass that I should be looking for?

Again, I appreciate your help!

Kind regards,

Wendy

Hi Wendy,

Yes a basic, nationwide JR Pass would cover all your travels!

You can order one online here. There are also regional passes available such as the West and Sanyo pass but you won't have to look for those as they cover only a limited area and would not include all your routes.

Have a great time in Japan!
