Hi there,

For your trip you should look into a 7 day JR Pass for the period 8th-14th as until this time you're not doing an awful amount of travel. Here are the approximate base ticket costs for the legs from the 8th-14th:

  1. Osaka > Tokyo: ¥13950, (194mins, 556km)
  2. Tokyo > Odawara: ¥3840, (35mins, 83km)
  3. Odawara > Takayama: ¥12710, (240mins, 448km)

TOTAL: ¥30500 for 3 legs

  • 07 day rail pass (¥28,300) saving: ¥2200

A 7 day pass will give you a base saving of ¥2200, and will also make any further JR travel during this period free. For example you can use it for a day trip to Nikko, or for travel on all the JR lines within Tokyo. Here's map of JR lines in Tokyo for reference.

Of course you would make further savings if you could fit the return to Kyoto into this 7 day period, but this wil depend on how concrete your plans are. If you cannot then purchasing individual JR tickets as needed will be more cost effective than a 14 day pass. Overall I recommend a 7 day pass + individual tickets as needed.

Hope this helps!
