Hi,

After my Tokyo portion of the trip, I will spend an additional 21 days in Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Kumamoto and Fukuoka. From Fukuoka, I plan to take the JR Kyushu Ferry Beetle over to Busan.

Question 1
Does it make more sense to buy one way JR tickets between cities (my calculation for one way tickets is $283.99) and use the Suica card or if available buy local 1/2 day transportation passes for inner city travel.

From what I can tell the local transportation, buses, subways, trains, trolleys will get you closer to the attractions than the inner city JR rail.

My concern is the 7/14/21 ($347.00/$556.00/$695.00) JR Rail pass is expensive especially if your going to take local transportation in the inner cities and not the JR rail.

Question 2
Can you use the JR Kyushu pass to get from Hiroshima to Kumamoto and can you use the JR Kyushu pass on the JR Kyushu Jet Ferry between Fukuoka to Busan?

The transportation system is very complex and not very intuitive.

If you have a different thought that makes more sense, it would be greatly appreciated. Pro's and cons would be appreciated.

Thank you
Annette

Hi there,

If you plan on using local transportation a lot more than JR Rail then yes I agree that it doesn’t make sense to purchase a JR Pass.

The regular JR Kyushu Pass will not cover travel from Hiroshima as it is not in the Kyushu area. It is certainly worth looking into the Sanyo-San’in Northern Kyushu Pass, which is a 7-day pass that will allow travel between Hiroshima, Osaka, and also Fukuoka, Kumamoto etc. This is a great pass to use towards the end of your trip if you’re able to, whenever you plan on leaving Hiroshima and going towards Kyushu, but check whether it’s a cost-effective option for you. Also if it was longer it would be more useful for you but it is only a 7-day pass so it’s up to you.

Hope this helps!

Alexis
