If I buy a 1st class, can I use it on the Nozomi trains?
Ideally, I need an 8 day pass - I assume that is not available?

Hi there,

The Greenpass is valid on the same trains as the normal JR-Pass and unfortunately this does not include the Nozomi/Mizuho trains, you can take the Hikari train instead that travels the same route as the Nozomi.

The Nationwide JR-Pass comes in 3 flavors 7, 14 and 21 days.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Many thanks. As part of my travel pans I want to go from Tokyo to Nagasaki. Can you tell me a website where I can find the schedule of trains that I can use with the JR rail pass?

No problem!

Here are some example routes, all these trains are covered by the JR-Pass. You can adjust times to your liking at the bottom of the page.

Also see our blog post about planning with Hyperdia to learn more about it.

Thank you - you've been very helpful. One last question if I may - I would like to get from Tokyo to Nagasaki as quickly as possible - is there a possibility to pay extra to travel on the Nozomi train or would it mean paying the full fare in addition to the fee already paid for the JR pass??

Hi Again,

It is indeed a long trip from Tokyo to Nagasaki, 1328.8 km by train!
You will have to pay the full price if you would like to use to Nozomi train, even if you have the JR-Pass.
I checked the difference in total travel time between the Nozomi and Hikari trains, on average the Nozomi is 40 minutes faster (with one expection that is about 60 minutes faster) compared to the Hikari Trains on the same route, for me personally it would not be worth the extra money.

I looked up the fastest routes with the JR-Pass for you, here they are. I am referring to Route 1 and 4 leaving Tokyo at 07:33 and 09:33 respectively, both routes are slightly under 499 minutes.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
