I would like to know the best deal for the above itinerary. (I will be using shinkan- sen) (Bullet train)

Day 1: kofu(Yamanaciken) - kyoto (8 nights in Kyoto)

Day 9: kyoto-Shinjuku (Tokyo)

Day 14: Shinjuku-Narita

I will stay 6 nights in tokyo sight seen using JR yamanote-sen.

I need to know if JR runs in Kyoto.

Hi there,

Based on the listed travel alone:

  1. Kofu > Kyoto: ¥12,500 (258mins, 410km)
  2. Kyoto > Shinjuku(jr): ¥13,220 (184mins, 517km)
  3. Shinjuku(jr) > Narita airport: no route found

Your JR ticket costs would come to ¥28,180. As a 14 day pass is ¥45,100, you'll need to spend an extra ¥16,920 on further JR travel in order for a 14 day JR Pass (I think this is your only option given your travel plans) to be worthwhile. While there is a JR service in Kyoto, it is fairly limited within the city, and so you may not get great use of JR unless you travel to outside of the city to Nara, Osaka or Hiroshima.

You can look up precise train timetables and costs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for JR Pass holders through our video blog.

Hope this helps!
