Which pass do you recommend

Hi,

My planned trip in April 2024 to Japan covers the following places:

Tokyo Narita Airport ~ Fukui (staying with a friend near Sabae station, 5 days) ~ day trips from Fukui (or stay overnight in Kyoto) ~ Tokyo (4 days) ~ Tokyo Haneda Airport

The duration is 10 days (including arrival & departure dates).

I wonder whether I should get the JR Kansai Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass, the Hokuriku Arch Pass, or the JR Pass (or if any other choices). I'll be based in Fukui for a few days then Tokyo for the last part of the trip, so the day trips from Fukui are still TBC - but I think Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kanazawa are some feasible options I am considering.

Would love any insights and recommendations (for both the pass to use, and whether the day trips make sense) - TIA!

Hi there,

A Hokuriku Arch Pass seems like the best option for you, as long as you have the activation date set to begin from the start of your trip so that it can expire in Tokyo when you don't have any further major train journeys.

Hope this helps!

Thank you Alexis. Another question if you don't mind - given that I am based out of Fukui for the 5 days, which cities do you recommend for short trips / day trips from Fukui (using the HAP)? I plan on 2D1N for Kyoto, and at least one of the following: Nara / Osaka / Kanazawa. The choice between Nara or Osaka is proving really difficult.

Thanks again!

Hi there,

Nara, Osaka and Kanazawa are very different cities. Kanazawa may be the easiest for you, as it serves as a stopover on your return to Tokyo and so you'll have to worry less about getting back in time from a day trip to Nara or Osaka. Nara is known to have more green spaces, traditional historical sites, and is relatively quiet compared to other cities. Osaka is a lot more 'city-like', with a lot of interesting places to eat and shop and with a very bustling urban atmosphere. The choice is yours, it comes down to what you prioritise.

Kind regards,

Alexis
