Which Japan rail pass should I buy

I’ll be traveling to Japan from Oct 23-Nov 5. My entry and exit point will be Fukuoka, I plan to visit Fukuoka, Nagasaki and Kyōto plus any other towns/cities along the way. I’m flexible with the dates and length of stay in the 3 cities mentioned. What would be the best rail pass for me to buy given my planned itinerary? Would it be the Sanyo-San’in Northern Kyushu pass or the Japan Rail Pass? Thanks !

Hi there,

The Northern Kyushu/Sanyo San’in Area Pass works great for your itinerary, as it lets you freely use the Shinkansen between Fukuoka and Kyoto (including Hiroshima, Kobe etc. on the way) and covers travel to Nagasaki. However, the pass is only valid for 7 days, and you’ll be in Japan for 14 days, so my recommendation would be to purchase it if you are willing to spend more time in Fukuoka at the start and end of your trip, e.g. if you spend 4 days in Fukuoka at the start of your journey and then 3 days before you return it lets you freely spend the rest of the 7 days anywhere else you might want to go in the area. If this isn’t a viable option, you could either consider a 14-day JR Pass or purchasing 2 Regional Passes back-to-back.

Hope this helps!

Alexis
