Regional pass with student visa permit

Hi!
I’m going to Japan in november and I already got my JRPass. However, my friend has got her student visa with a residence permit of 90 days and won’t be able to use it even though she already purchased. Now the questions are:
- will she be able to ask for a refund of her unused exchange voucher for JRPass at a JR office? - we’re planning in doing Osaka - Nara - Kyoto - Hiroshima - Miyajima - Kobe and Himeji in a week. Will she be eligible for a Kansai Hiroshima regional pass with her student visa? I believe she’ll have to buy Tokyo-Osaka ticket on her own, so we’re looking for a cheap alternative regional pass that can be used regardless of visa. - does the kansai hiroshima pass cover as well fast train from Shin Osaka to Kyoto and back?

Hi there,

Student Visa's generally do not provide eligibility for JR Passes, or regional passes. There are a few exceptions such as the Tokyo Wide Pass. However, she won't be able to refund her pass in Japan or use any of the JR West passes (such as Kansai Hiroshima regional pass) that are only available for tourism.

Thank you Daniel san for your kind reply. Do you know if there are any passes for the Kansai region she may be eligible for, or at least some discounts on trains? I’d feel bad if she had to pay way more than me, otherwise I’ll have to change the itinerary to make it easier on her wallet.
