Is there a way to avoid having to switch trains (local to Shinkansen) in Osaka by paying a little extra or must you switch trains in Osaka from a local train from Kyoto to Osaka to the Shinkansen for the rest of the trip to Fukuoka?

Hi there,
You'll have to switch, as you change from different Shinkansen/Express train lines - the easiest way to do it is to take the local express service to Osaka and then a Sanyo Shinkansen service to Hakata Station (Which is actually Fukuoka city, slightly confusing I know !)
Kind regards,
Alexis
