20 Day Trip - JR Pass or Regional Passes

Hello,

I will be in Japan for 20 days and our group has planned a route together that’s pretty fixed. What I’m still not sure about is whether the JR Pass (for the whole trip) is worth it. I know it has gone up in price and the ‘calculator’ seems to suggest its not worth it, but then that doesn’t seem to take into account the travel via JR within cities. I’ve also looked at variations of the regional west pass for the first half of the journey after Tokyo and have been considering that too.

Would appreciate any thoughts/advice. Even pointers of where to look to get the ticket prices so I can compare myself.

Our itinerary is:

Tokyo (from Narita Airport) (3 nights)
Kyoto (4 nights) + Day Trip to Nara
Osaka (3 nights) + Day trip to Hiroshima
Kanazawa (2 nights)
Takayama (2 nights)
Shirakawa (Day Trip either from Kanazawa or Takayama)
Nakatsugawa/Magome - Nakosendo Trail (3 nights)
Tokyo (flying from Narita Airport) (2 nights)

Hi there,

For your itinerary it is likely to be more cost-effective to purchase your tickets individually. However, the JR Pass will cover most of your itinerary and so it is still an option worth looking into if you feel that a pass is better suited for you.

Hope this helps!
