Hi there! First, wanted to say that this forum and the depth of answers given by your team is incredible! I feel like I've been able to get a good amount of info but still wanted to double check about what I should do for travel plans for my family of 4 (2 adults/2 kids) on our upcoming trip.

Looks like JRPass doesn't connect with Hakone so I'm wondering if it doesn't make sense to do JR Pass, but please let me know what you think about the 7/14 day JR Pass vs. individual tickets... our itinerary is below.

June 22: Travel day to Japan
June 23: arrive in Tokyo
June 24-27: Tokyo exploring
Jun 28: travel to Hakone
June 29: Hakone
June 30: travel to Kyoto
July 1-3: Kyoto exploring
July 4: Return to Tokyo
July 5: travel day home

While in Kyoto, we'll probably do a day trip to Nara as well.

Greatly appreciate any input you might have - thank you so much!

Hi there,

Apologies for the late reply. Thank you for your kind words !

For your itinerary, it makes the most sense to purchase your tickets individually. You are correct that travel to Hakone isn't fully covered by the JR Pass, but even looking past this, your itinerary is relatively short and so it wouldn't be a cost-effective option for you.

Kind regards,

Alexis

Thank you so much for your reply & advice.

Our plan now would be to do the Hakone Free Pass to get to Hakone since that includes a tickets from Shinjuku Station.

Wondering if I can get your expertise on a couple other questions:
1. We are staying near the Gora station in Hakone - from what I can tell, if I upgrade our tickets to use the Limited Express Romance car, we wouldn't have to make any transfers and that train would take us directly to the Gora station - is that correct?

  1. And then to get from Hakone to Kyoto, what would you suggest? When I use Google Maps it's estimating roughly a 3.5-4hr trip by public transit... is that accurate? Does it make more sense to go back to Tokyo and take the bullet train to Kyoto from there?

Appreciate your insight - thanks!
Jess

Thanks so much!
