Hello, below is our itinerary:
From Tokyo- to kyoto- to kurashaki- to hita city (oita)-to osaka-to tokyo
Is the JR pass cover all these above locations?
Also, we arrive on sept 22nd but will not need our JR pass until september 25. Can we activate the same day we need it?
How long before a trip do we need to book our seats?
Will booking seats cost extra with the ordinary(basic) pass?

Yes, the JR Pass will cover travel to all of the locations listed. My recommendation would be for you to activate the JR Pass as soon as you land in Japan, and then have the activation date set to the 25th when they ask you. This means you can begin making reservations from the 22nd so that you have a higher likelihood of being able to secure seats on the trains you need at the time you need to be there. I would always recommend booking your seats as far as you can in advance but in reality it is possible to make reservations just before you board the train, although it’s definitely not guaranteed that you’d find seats!
Booking seats will not add any additional costs - the price of the JR Pass is all you pay.
