Hi, I'm very confused about the various pass available for overseas tourist. We are a group of 5 adults plus 1 children (11yo) traveling within Sapporo for 4 days then fly to Fukuoka hopping to travel to Hiroshima, Beppu, Kumamoto & Nagasaki for the next 4 days. The itinerary in Kyshu is not fixed yet so we can be flexible about the traveling arrangement if need be. Can you advise what pass we should be getting so as not to worry taking bus, train or any public transport (no cycling though)? Thank you very much in advance!

Hi there,

This is a bit of a chicken and egg question, if you don't mind the comparison. Having the flexibility is nice as you get to plan and optimize for any pass, but at the same time without knowing the full trip details I can't say for sure what the definite the best option will be.

I think for travel around Kyushu, I would look at using a JR Kyushu area pass or JR Northern Kyushu pass. For Hiroshima, getting a normal ticket up there might make the most sense, as there is no pass for both Hiroshima and Kyushu. The Kyushu passes will get you all around the island by train. If Hiroshima is not a requirement, then you could spend your time around Kyushu, cities like Kagoshima, Yufuin and Kurokawa Onsen are all fantastic to visit.

Kind regards,
Daniel
