Hello,

me and my girlfriend are visiting Japan for two weeks in April, 8th-21:th. We would like to experience as much of Japan as possible during this period of time. We are thinking something like this:

When we arrive at Narita Airport (09:35AM) we would like to go directly to Hakone where we are staying at an Ryokan for two nights.

From Hakone we would then like to travel to Hiroshima. Then stay in and around Hiroshima 2nights. (probably going to Himeji and Miyajima during this time)

Then we will continue our journey to Kyoto, for two nights. And then on to Takayama, for two nights, to visit the yearly spring festival on the 14:th and 15:th.

Finally we want to return to Tokyo to spend our remaining 5days in and around Tokyo (Maybe with daytrips to Yokohama and Kamakura) before going back to Narita on the 21:th.

Now, the question is: do you think we should buy the 14day JR-pass or is it smarter to buy the 7day pass and then buy single tickets for the remaining days? And in that case, when is the best time to activate the 7day pass?

Maybe we should take the "Narita Express" to Tokyo and then buy the "Hakone 2-day pass" and activate our 7day JR-pass when we leave Hakone? (if it is possible to activate the pass anywhere?)??

Please help us to figure this out, thanks in advance!

Hi there!

For a trip like this your costs are:

  1. Narita airport terminal 1 > Tokyo: ¥2740, (62mins, 79km)
  2. Tokyo > Odawara: ¥3440, (35mins, 83km)
  3. Odawara > Hiroshima: ¥17330, (287mins, 810km)
  4. Hiroshima > Himeji: ¥7870, (63mins, 249km)
  5. Himeji > Kyoto: ¥2210, (91mins, 130km)
  6. Kyoto > Takayama: ¥9380, (193mins, 314km)
  7. Takayama > Tokyo: ¥14000, (273mins, 532km)
  8. Tokyo > Yokohama: ¥1260, (23mins, 28km)
  9. Yokohama > Tokyo: ¥450, (28mins, 28km)
  10. Tokyo > Kamakura: ¥1700, (47mins, 51km)
  11. Kamakura > Tokyo: ¥890, (58mins, 53km)
  12. Tokyo > Narita airport terminal 1: ¥2740, (58mins, 79km)

TOTAL: ¥64010 for 12 legs

Now, the question is: do you think we should buy the 14day JR-pass or is it smarter to buy the 7day pass and then buy single tickets for the remaining days? And in that case, when is the best time to activate the 7day pass?

Based on the travel costs, I recommend you go for a 7 day pass for this trip + Narita Express/Suica combo and Odakyuu Hakone freepass. You can start the japan rail pass on the 10th and be back in tokyo on the 16th for the end of your trip. You will have to pay for your trips to yokohama and kamakura, but these shouldn't break the bank.

Your overall costs on this plan will be:

Narita Express return + suica: ¥5,500
JR Pass 7 day: ¥28,300
Odakyu Hakone FreePass: ¥5,000
Possible trips to Yokohama and Kamakura: ¥4,000

Total: ¥42,800

Hope this helps!
