Hi everyone,
I am from Brazil and my wife and I are planning to visit Japan from April 10 to 26 arriving at Narita Airport. We wold like to visit Tokio, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Kumamoto and Okinawa. Is it cost effetcive to buy a JR 14 day pass for us? Considering that we would like to travel aroud the cities using trains and metro as well. Thanks in advance!
Renato
Trip to Japan
Hi there,
The trip to Okinawa will have to be done by plane or ferry (likely plane), so I've excluded that from the route calculations
A 14 day rail pass costs ¥45,100, so you'll need to spend more than that on individual tickets for it to make sense. I've assumed a round trip, but it's not too clear which airport you'll be leaving for home from so this will affect your decision.
- Narita airport terminal 1 > Tokyo: ¥2740, (62mins, 79km)
- Tokyo > Kyoto: ¥13020, (165mins, 513km)
- Kyoto > Hiroshima: ¥10590, (109mins, 380km)
- Hiroshima > Kumamoto: ¥12770, (106mins, 399km)
- Kumamoto > Tokyo: ¥25370, (406mins, 1293km)
- Tokyo > Narita airport terminal 1: ¥2740, (58mins, 79km)
TOTAL: ¥67230 for 6 legs
Assuming you do the trip above, then I would certainly recommend a 14 day rail pass.
You can look up train timetables and costs at the hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for Japan Rail Pass holders through our video blog.
Hope this helps!
