Hi there,

We arrive in Tokyo on Oct 4th with a plan to head to Kawaguchi lake for a couple of days, then directly to Fukuoka, followed by Kyoto (with travel around the area for 5 days), and eventually back to up to Tokyo to head home on October 20th.

2 kids and 2 adults. I'm not sure exactly out of the above the JR Pass will cover in terms of cost. Between Tokyo and Fuji is it self pay and not in advance? If buying a green first class JR Pass, is it required to book long trips in advance? i.e. Fuji/Tokyo to Fukuoka? Obviously we want to ensure thee family sits together and is comfortable for such a long ride.

Thanks

Hi there,

Kawaguchiko - Kyoto is not an easy route to travel in one way, especially with a family. Going to Fukuoka is way to much to do in one way. It either involves several transfers by local train or a long ride on the bus. I recommend you look at this first and decide if you want to go ahead with it. As alternatives, you could do Kawaguchiko as a day trip from Tokyo or visit Hakone instead. For more information see our Fuji post: https://www.jrpass.com/blog/itinerary-tip-mt-fuji

Then for the JR Pass, a 7-day JR Pass would very cost efficient on this route and Green Class will make the trip even more comfortable. I would recommend reserving your seats 1-2 days in advance to secure seating together.

Kind regards,
Daniel
