Hi! My fiance and I will be applying for Japan visa and hopefully we will be allowed to travel for our honeymoon.
I made two itineraries. Please make recommendations. We are planning to use JR-14 days-pass on all travels excluding travels in our package tour. We want to see more but we are in a tight budget. Are guesthouses safe?

FIRST ITINERARY
Feb. 1-5 Package tour Tokyo to Kyoto
START OF JR PASS
Feb. 6 – Kyoto to Osaka
Universal Studios
Feb. 7 – Osaka-Hiroshima-Osaka
Day tour at Hiroshima
Feb. 8 – in Osaka hop on train to Kobe, stay for 2-3 hours then back to Osaka
Get things in hotel then head to Tokyo
Feb. 9 – rise early for Disneysea
Feb. 10 and 11- Nikko and Kinugawa onsen
Feb. 12-14 visit Nagano Monkeys and Skiing
Feb. 15-16 Omagari (Akita) Snow Festival
Feb. 17 Akita to Tokyo. depart in Narita

OR SECOND ITINERARY
Feb. 1-5 Package tour Tokyo to Kyoto
START OF JR PASS
Feb. 6 – Kyoto to Osaka
Universal Studios
Feb. 7 – Osaka- Kobe-Osaka- Hiroshima-Osaka
From Osaka hop on train to shin kobe station
Go back to Osaka and Get things from hotel, hop on shinkansen to Hiroshima
Feb. 8 – tour Hiroshima in the afternoon travel to Tokyo
Feb. 9 – rise early for Disneysea
Feb. 10 and 11- Nikko and Kinugawa onsen
Feb. 12-14 visit Nagano Monkeys and Skiing
Feb. 15-16 Omagari (Akita) Snow Festival
Feb. 17 Akita to Tokyo. depart in Narita

Thank you so much!

Hi there!

These both look like great plans, but I recommend the first itinerary as the travel is a little more spaced out and the nightlife in Hiroshima is not a patch on Osaka - Hiroshima is the perfect day trip.

You can also use coin lockers in the stations to store luggage while you are on day trips (for example while you are visiting Kobe). These are extremely cheap, safe and cost effective. We have a blog post on how to use coin operated luggage lockers in JR stations on our blog. If these are full, there is also a very well managed left luggage counter at Osaka station that you will also be able to use. See signposts in the station, or ask at the english speaking information counter at the station for directions.

Guesthouses in Japan are extremely safe. If you are travelling on a budget, you may also think about staying in YHA Youth Hostels or Hosteling International hostels. If you have a YHA/HI card you can also often get a discount, and many have family rooms that will be more suitable. Youth Hostels, such as this one in Kyoto have a really nice feel and you'll meet lots of other like minded Japanese and foreign travellers.

I think you'll have a lot of fun with your itinerary - sounds excellent!
