Good morning,

I will be in Japan for a 10 days period in early April, I would like some advice whether it would be worth getting the 7-days JR Rail Pass for part of the trip (from day 4 to 10?).

The itinerary will be:

Day 1 - Narita Airport to Tokyo
Day 4 - Tokyo to Kamakura, back to Tokyo
Day 5 - Tokyo to Kyoto
Day 7 - Kyoto to Arashiyama, back to Kyoto
Day 9 - Kyoto to Yoshino-guchi, then Yoshino to Osaka
Day 10 - Osaka to Kansai International Airport

I would really appreciate your help.
Many thanks

Hi there!

Lets take a look at your costs:

  1. Tokyo > Kamakura: ¥1,700 (48mins, 51km)
  2. Kamakura > Tokyo: ¥1,700 (48mins, 51km)
  3. Tokyo > Kyoto: ¥13,020 (164mins, 513km)
  4. Kyoto > Sagaarashiyama: ¥230 (16mins, 10km)
  5. Sagaarashiyama > Kyoto: ¥230 (16mins, 10km)
  6. Kyoto > Yoshinoguchi: ¥1,450 (120mins, 100km)
  7. Yoshinoguchi > Osaka: ¥950 (85mins, 58km)
  8. Osaka > Kansai airport: ¥3,340 (57mins, 64km)

JR ticket cost: ¥22,620 for 8 legs

Based on this, you need to do a further ¥5680 of JR travel for a 7 day pass to be break even, so unless you intend to do more travel I think I recommend JR tickets rather than the rail pass.

I hope this helps!
