Hello!

Itinerary check: Starting Oct 9th to Oct 20th (2 pesrons). Very flexible (besides arrival/departure dates). Basically want to cover Tokyo, Kyoto (+Nara), Hiroshima, Hakone (optional).

Day 1: ARRIVE late at Narita Airport, Go to Tokyo
Day 2: Tokyo
Day 3: Tokyo
Day 4: Tokyo
Day 5: Travel to Hakone (Odawara)
Day 6: Travel to Kyoto
Day 7: Kyoto
Day 8: Kyoto (day trip to Nara?)
Day 9: Travel to Hiroshima
Day 10: Hiroshima
Day 11: Travel back to Tokyo
Day 12: DEPART early morning (Narita)

Same old question: 7day or 14day JR Pass. I want to get around Tokyo easily - explore and do the typical tourists spots. Day trips to Nikka are options. I definitely need a 7day pass for the last 7 days of my trip. But, how about the start of the trip in Tokyo? Is JR pass fine for getting around Tokyo? Or is it easier to get around with metro pass? My intineray is quite flexible, so perhaps a 14 day JR Pass would be worry free...

Hi there,

Same old question indeed :)

Although a 14 day JR Pass will be very useful around Tokyo, you'd need to spend ¥16,800 on JR tickets during this period to make using a 14 day pass worthwhile. Even if you did visit Nikko in this case (¥10,000), you'd still need to spend around ¥6000 on further JR travel per day to make it worthwhile. Because of this, I think I'd recommend you to purchase:

  1. Metro passes or Pasmo travel cards for use inside Tokyo as needed. The metro is very convenient for inner city travel, though you may occasionally need to use JR trains. If you do decide to visit Nikko, you could look into the Kanto Area Pass which you can purchase on arrival in Japan.
  2. A 7 day Japan Rail Pass for use from the 5 to the 11th.

Hope this makes things clearer - looks like a great trip ;)
