Hi, We are a family group with 2 kids and 4 adults. We will be visiting Japan from 1st May 2013.
We plan on staying for 10 days in Tokyo and 10 days in Kyoto. While there we will visit nearby locales -
it would be great to get feedback regarding which places to visit on Day trips from both Tokyo and Kyoto.
Obviously we will visit all the places within the city environs but I would love to visit nearby destinations - please advice.

Thanks,
Aparna.

Hi there!

Here are some suggestions for you:

Tokyo

  • Nikko World Heritage Site
  • Kamakura
  • Hakone (using a Hakone Free Pass, but may be a long trip)

Kyoto

  • Nara / Uji
  • Arashiyama
  • Osaka
  • Horyuji
  • Kinosaki Onsen (overnight)
  • Koyasan (overnight)

Hope this helps give you some ideas!

Hi, Thanks for the information.
We will definitely check out these places.

I also have a query about the JR Pass - I plan on purchasing JR Passes for all 6 of us, so what I want to know is....will the passes be of use when I wish to visit these and other places outside the main cities? Or do I have to purchase seperate train tickets again for every journey??

Hi there!

The JR Pass will be good for all of these locations. You will need to purchase some extra tickets for Hakone and Koyasan but the JR Pass will get you most of the way there in these cases.

Check our JR Pass map for more confirmation on this! :)
