Hello, I am travelling with 15 students and 2 teachers to Japan end of October.
We will travel from
Tokio to Kawaguchiko station Sunday
Mishima station to Osaka Monday
Osaka - Kobe - Hiroshima Wednesday
Hiroshima - Hofu - Hiroshima Thursday
Hiroshima - Akashi Tech college - Kioto Friday

Is it a good idea to take the 7 JR pass or will it be cheaper to travel with single tickets each time?
And how can I reserve seats in advance for such a big group at once? (I suppose reservation is necessary with JR pass but also for single tickets)?

Thank you for your help!

Hi there,

I'd recommend purchasing a Kansai-Hiroshima Pass for use from Monday to Friday, and purchasing the bus ticket to Kawaguchiko and the Shinkansen trip to Osaka separately as this will likely be your most cost effective option.

Alternatively, because you're travelling with lots of students it may be worth spending slightly more per person so that more of your itinerary is covered by a JR Pass, as it would make seat reservations systematically a lot easier. This would cover all of your itinerary except for the bus ride to Kawaguchiko, which would would be significantly cheaper than the Shinkansen tickets anyway. Hopefully JR Staff can accommodate you as a large group, but as long as you have all the Passes with you the JR Staff at Ticket Offices will be able to make the reservations you need. Also, since you have the JR Pass you can do all of this in one sitting for all of the trains you'll be taking so it would be useful.

Kind regards,

Alexis

Thank you so much for your advice! This helps a lot. We have looked at the Kansai Hiroshima pass, but we don’t think it covers our trip to Hofu (west Japan)? Would it maybe be a better idea to buy the the JR West All Area Pass instead? And if so, where would we best buy this pass online? Can we order 17 passes at once?
Kind regards Annemarie
