I also was planning on taking the Resort Shirakami in November until I just read that it isn't running past the end of October.
What are the "regular" trains like on this same route from Akita to Hirosaki? Where can I see a schedule?

Thank you for your post! You can use regular trains like the Tsugaru ltd. express.
These are comfortable and fast. The schedule can be found on regular planning websites, like Hyperdia and Navitime.
