Hello! We will be taking a three week trip arriving into Sapporo on Dec. 27 and departing out of Tokyo on Jan. 18.

Our first week we will spend in Hokkaido: fly into Sapporo on Dec. 27, stay in Sapporo, take a bus to Niskeo Dec. 31 and then we will need to take a train up to Otaru on Jan 3.

From there we will need to take a train from Maizuru to Osaka on Jan. 5. Will likely visit Nara or Kobe as well.

Will depart to Nagoya on Jan 9. From there to Fuji area (going to Fujiyoshida, so either Mishima Station or Gotemba Station, I thnk).

From Mt. Fuji we will head to Tokyo on Jan 13 and stay there until our departure out of Haneda on Jan 18.

With this itinerary does the three week pass make sense? Or would we really just need to cover the second two weeks of our trip, and. buy individual passes for our time up in Hokkaido?

Hi there,

Considering your entire itinerary, including a potential trip from Otaru to Maizuru, the most cost-effective option might be a 14-day Nationwide JR Pass activated from the 3rd to the 16th of January. This would cover your Hokkaido travels and potentially other long-distance journeys. You can use individual tickets for the rest of your journey.
I recommend exchanging your voucher at New Chitose Airport or JR Sapporo Station. You can find a complete list of JR Pass exchange locations here.

The Nationwide JR Pass covers your itinerary except for Mt. Fuji.
To help you plan your Mt. Fuji visit, we have a blog post here: Snow returns to Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji.

I hope this helps!

Kind Regards,

Mariko
