Hi!
I'm going to Japan for 15 days and I'm planning to buy a 7-day JR Pass and then stay the last 9 days in Tokyo.
Please, help me check if it's a smart itinerary in terms of visiting some iconic places and relaxing on the way.
I'll arrive in Osaka Kansai Airport and sleep there the first night, march 30th, then i plan to start using the pass - I also want to know how long is the trip between the cities i mention on each day, ok?

Sunday, March 31 - Osaka-Kyoto (maybe i'll visit some place in Osaka first)
Monday, April 01 - stay in Kyoto
Tuesday, April 02- Day-trip to Nara
Wednesday, April 03 - Stay in Kyoto or do a shortreturn trip to another near city (is Himeji Castle still closed?)
Thursday, April 04 - Stay in Kyoto or do a short return trip (any tips?)
Friday, April 05 - Kyoto-Hiroshima, taking the first direct train (return trip to Myiajima on the afternoon)
Saturday, April 06 MAJOR DOUBT - Hiroshima-Fujikawaguvhiko-Tokyo

I really want to spend some time on an olsen at Fujikawaguchiko, but i don't know if the best choice is to straight to Tokyo from there or go back to Hiroshima and take a night train to Tokyo.

I hope you can answer soon!

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

The train from Osaka to Kyoto is about 30 minutes and from Kyoto to Nara a little over an Hour, other popular places in Kansai can also be reached from within an hour from Kyoto. Himeji also makes for a great day trip, the castle is still under reconstruction but you can walk around the castle grounds and the parks around it, especially Koko-en garden is very beautiful.

If you are looking for an other day trip from Kyoto consider Kobe also Kinosaki-Onsen is a great visit.

About Fujikawaguchiko, it is a very beautiful place to visit but I feel it would make a better visit once you are in Tokyo, this for a couple of reasons but mainly because travel in the area is not covered by the JR-Pass and it is easy to reach from Tokyo. See the JNTO website about it.

If you do want to visit after Hiroshima you will have to go directly after to Tokyo because there is no direct Night train from Hiroshima to Tokyo.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
